Marriage is a complex, messy, hard and difficult thing for most. But to Christians, it can be quite simpler- or not. As this is a personal blog, I won’t try to imagine other people’s experiences (but please do feel free to comment!). For several years, I had a love affair with my mistress, from the poppy seed. God made the flora, but let’s not get off course. Whenever a love interest or boyfriend would ask me to choose between them and opium, I would wave good bye, without a second thought.
Then, I met someone different. He did not give me a choice- which I liked, supported me while detoxing and disgusting in bed “in sickness and health,” but for an array of other reasons, things did not work out. Losing him the first time was the worst thing that happened to me, til present time. He graciously gave me a second chance, and this time, I knew what I had to lose. “I used to live alone before I knew you…It's a cold, and it's a very broken Hallelujah”- Leonard Cohen was so right. It was a broken, a lonely, a damn awful Hallelujah. He must know from experience.
David, the wise and lustful David, lamented in Psalms: “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle.” My tears would would have made the ocean saltier than the Dead Sea. With a little help from my Jehovah's Witness family and their community, I got to learn more of His Word. While I am not a fan of the woman being the neck and the man the head, I do agree with following Man’s law, for we are on this Earth- we aren’t in heaven quite yet.
Romans 13 puts this much more clearly: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” So, like Jesus told them outside the temple, “give unto Caesar,” I completely concur. That’s why we pay taxes, honor our vows, and pay heed to the proper authority, should we choose to.
Personally, I believe if you are married, you owe them respect and honor. If you want to have an affair- have the decency not to get caught. Is an affair something so terrible? I think you either realize you love your spouse, or that you don’t- then leave them. Or confess, come clean, to each their own. But I see an illicit affair as binary, with two options as the end result. If you don’t wish to remain, null and void that marriage, so no one is sinning in His eyes. It is fair not only to the faithful one, but to the unfaithful one. For they are sinning too, and do you want that on their souls?
